The Liberty High School girls basketball team is on quite a run – both this year and in recent years.
With a 39-32 victory over Wylie East on Tuesday, the Redhawks advanced to a 5A state semifinal meeting with Lubbock Cooper. That matchup will be played Saturday at 4 p.m. at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio.
Playing late in the postseason is a very familiar spot for Liberty, which last year won the 5A state title. Two years ago, the Redhawks were the state runner-up. Those achievements are part of a string of enduring success that has been building for a decade.
Here are Liberty’s postseason results over the last nine seasons:
2021: Play in state semifinals Saturday
2020: State Champion
2019: State Runner-up
2018: Regional Semifinalist
2017: Regional Finalist
2016: State Runner-up
2015: Regional Quarterfinalist
2014: Regional Semifinalist
2013: Regional Finalist
Liberty has excelled in close games over the last two years, winning six playoff games by six points or less. Those half-dozen include playoff wins this year over McKinney North (29-27) and fellow FISD school Memorial (33-28). A year ago, Liberty’s march to the state title included a one-point victory over fellow FISD school Centennial, along with a six-point victory over Red Oak and two overtime thrillers: 48-43 in triple overtime over Midlothian to get to the state tournament and 44-41 over College Station in the state semifinals.
It has been a very exciting playoff run for Liberty. Good luck to the Redhawks as they pursue another state title!
